Poster Number: B1
The last known systematic literature review of the existing transgender aging research was completed in 2012..Due to the vulnerability and oppression that older transgender individual face it is increasingly important that the needs of this populations be understood. Following up to the previous review of the older trans literature, the current study searched eight databases using inclusive and specific search terms. Two members of the research team systematically searched the databases to confirm one another’s findings. The team then reviewed the articles to consider if they met the following inclusion criteria: must be a United States context/sample of the study, studies that included adults aged 50 or older, and at least 20% of sample participants were trans or gender nonconforming older adults. The inclusion criteria was also that the article must be peer reviewed articles and published after 2012. This resulted in 87 articles. The team then utilized a rating document to independently review articles and met repeatedly to discuss. The research team included one trans man, one gender diverse person, and a person who identifies as bisexual thus providing a diverse perspective when considering the literature. The process resulted in 87 articles that were located which was an increase from 2012. The articles focused on: experiences of gender affirming care for older adults, disparities in healthcare and end-of-life-care, impacts on mental health, and challenges in aging. The research body itself came mainly from the social work, psychology and health care fields and were mostly qualitative studies. Most participants were transwomen (MtF), “young old”, and White. Consistent findings among the studies included that mental health is a large factor in trans individuals’ lives and that trans elders have fewer social supports than cisgender elders. End-of-life preparations are a large stressor and there are many barriers to accessing the needed care. Alzheimer's and cardiovascular issues were prevalent. Hormone replacement therapy was a key treatment. There are several needs and issues within the most current research literature on trans aging to include sampling, study design, and topically. These will be further discussed in the presentation.
