B200 - Bridging Perspectives of the Punjabi-Speaking South Asian Community for Culturally Tailored Exercise Oncology: The Role of a Punjabi Community Advisory Board

Introduction: Physical activity (PA) is an effective evidence-based intervention with extensive physical and psychosocial benefits for individuals living with and beyond cancer. Despite being the largest visible minority group in Canada, uptake of currently available exercise interventions, such as the Canada-wide Exercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well (EXCEL) study, is low among individuals of South Asian heritage living with and beyond cancer. To address this gap, we are using a community-engaged research approach and have developed a Punjabi Advisory Board (PAB) to facilitate the tailoring of culturally relevant EXCEL resources for the Punjabi South Asian community that will empower their exercise behaviour change. Methods: The PAB is comprised of one South Asian individual living with and beyond cancer, two South Asian healthcare providers (one registered advance practice nurse and one physician), one South Asian qualified exercise professional, and a representative of Punjabi Community Health Services (a local non-profit aiming to bridge gaps in healthcare needs for the Punjabi South Asian community). A hybrid in-person/online meeting was held in June 2024. The PAB was informed of a pre-made 12-week Punjabi Exercise Oncology YouTube series as well as the EXCEL framework to provide feedback on. The PAB discussed the needs, barriers, facilitators, as well as additional concerns regarding PA for the South Asian population affected by cancer. Central to the discussion were issues around the outreach and education required amongst the community. Finally, how to culturally tailor the EXCEL prescription to be appropriate for this group, including types of exercise, was discussed. Discussion from the PAB was analyzed qualitatively using conventional content analysis. Results: Two themes were identified through analysis. The first theme was "the need for education and destigmatization" and included the codes (a) is rest best? and (b) what do I do? The second theme was "practical and cultural accessibility" and included the codes (a) dissemination needs, (b) gender norms, (c) family support, and (d) logistical barriers. Conclusion: This work highlights the need for cultural considerations when trying to facilitate lifestyle change, particularly for the South Asian population living with and beyond cancer. This ongoing work is informing the implementation and cultural tailoring of a Punjabi South Asian-specific exercise oncology intervention in 2025.
